OK, so my name's Gil, I'm a Pisces,
and I've always loved the water...that's got nothing to do with it!
There is just something exhilarating about swimming underwater, seeing
tons of cool marine life, exploring shipwrecks, and just generally
having a ball, that really appeals to me! |
|
Being weightless is just a bonus... |

| February, 2007:
Oahu, Hawaii Awesome diving! I dove with
Captain Bruce's Extreme Comfort Dive
Charters. We did the Mahi, the LCU, Black Rock and the Land of Oz,
Turtle Canyon, and more. On one day we had 150 foot viz!
It was fabulous, and I highly recommend Captain Bruce...
especially if you can dive with Kelli or Cameron! |

| You can check out
more underwater photos on
my Scuba Photos page. |
|
| September, 2003: New favorite place to
dive... Cozumel, Mexico! Did 6 dives there over three days, and it was
fantastic. The water was 84°... remember, I
normally dive in 48° water in Puget sound! Hell, at home we're happy when
the AIR is 84°!!! |
| I dove with
Scuba Du, located at El Presidenté Intercontinental Hotel, where my wife
and I also stayed. Fabulous hotel; there's really decent shore dive right
from the hotel's beach! The service at the hotel was world-class, though it
is not cheap. However, September is the off-season. If you're willing to
take chance on the weather, it can mean huge savings! We got lucky and only
had morning showers, but it is also hurricane season... |
| I recommend spending a few bucks more and
getting a Superior Room. Here's the view from our balcony: |
 |
| But the real thrill is diving on Palancar Reef,
the (as they love telling you :-), second largest coral reef in the world,
after The Great Barrier Reef. There are some underwater pics from there on
my Photo Album page. |

The picture to the left is the pool at El
Presidenté Hotel, with Scuba Du's dive hut in the background. Talk about a
picture being worth a thousand words! |
| By the way, we spent a few days in Cancun
before going to Cozumel. We both agreed that next time, the heck with
Cancun... we're going right to Cozumel! And my wife doesn't even dive (yet)!
Cancun was OK, quite a party place, and the people were great, but it felt
artificial. I compared it to Las Vegas: substitute beaches for casinos, and
it had that same sort of feeling. Now, I freely admit that I really don't
like Vegas. But Cozumel has great shopping and night life in San Miguel, and
is much more relaxed. My kind of place... |
| Take a 15 minute drive, and you can have half a
mile of beach on the Caribbean all to yourself! How do you beat that? Like
the one on the right... |

And for another reason to love this place, check
out the picture on the left, another from our balcony... this is not
a doctored photo! |

| July
3rd, 2000: Dove on a charter with Emerald
Seas, out of Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands. Had a great
time, even though the vis was poor and the current strong on the first
dive. We did Bell Island first. I was teamed with with a visiting
instructor named Eric. He's a very accomplished diver, and was very
gracious about being buddied up with a fairly new diver. We tried to stay
out of the current, but at about 75 feet deep it got us and away we went!
I had borrowed my brother-in-law's underwater camcorder, but the vis was
too low for good video. The other divers on the charter stayed
closer to the protected side of the island and had a better time.
I have just quit smoking 3 weeks ago, and fighting the current made me
use up my air in about 20 minutes! So it wasn't much of a dive for
me. But the next dive was at a kelp bed by a channel marker just
outside Friday Harbor. Still some current, but much less, and better
vis. I got some good video and enjoyed the dive a lot. Saw
TON's of scallops! Came up from the dive wanting sea food for dinner...
